Aoda 710020 : Absolute Being Eagle

I. INTRO : COLORS AND PACKAGING

Another plastic yoyos by Aoda. It comes in 2 color i.e. blue and black. The blue one has a transparent color while the black one has a solid color.

It comes with poly-cotton string which is usually being used for competition but still not install yet. You can install it by looking on the instruction which is on the back side of packaging. Pretty easy to do.

II. PARTS

1. Halves. The material use for this yoyo is very light but hard. It’s rigid and doesn’t flex, I think it’s more like ABS plastic instead of PP / PS. It has common butterfly-shape with the back part almost flat (V-shapped). It doesn’t have the pog on the caps, but there’s grove that can be used to attach pog design / picture to cover the caps. The axle housing is not exceed the groove so, yes, the pog can be added on the caps, nicely

2. Bearing. It uses small aoda bearing with size of : 5x11x5 mm. They are the same size as other yoyo brand such as Hspin or others. It’s not a concave bearing yet. The bearing is shielded (protected) in mix between Teflon-rubber shield on one side and metal shield on the other side. It’s pretty weird ’cause I’ve never seen this before. All I know is that the shield will be all rubber (which is superior to metal shield) or all metal shield. There’s a metal groove where the bearing seat so it doesn’t touch the axle.

3. The response system. It uses a pair of white silicon pad (silicone recess system) on both halves with a wide depth. The silicone pads sit on the well-deep plastic groove. When it wear-offs, it can be replace with silicone sealant for gasket or glass-aquarium.

4. Axle. It is made of steel and threaded all the way from left to right, in black color.

5. String. Surprisingly, it comes with semi poly-cotton string. It’s a good string for playing and would last longer than the cotton one.

III. GEOMETRY

1. Halves diameter

2. Pog diameter

3. Side to side

4. Gap

5. Bearing

6. Weight

7. Sleeper time, it never reach more than 20 seconds. Average is about 15 seconds straight out of the box.

IV. SUMMARY

This yoyo is good for beginner who’d like to try some standard trick. Somehow, it needs more weight to be ideally playable …. Be careful not to hit the surface a lot since the plastic material looks a bit fragile (easily broken).

V. UPGRADABILITY

Weight rings or other additional weight adjustment
Concave bearing for doing more trick
Protector for the outer rim ..

ooo END ooo

Aoda 710015 : Rapid Rotation

I. INTRO : COLORS AND PACKAGING

This yoyo comes in several colors which, so far that I know of, are : Yellow, Tosca Green and Pink (unfortunately I never have the pink one).

In the package, it comes together with cotton string uninstall to the yoyo. Instruction on how to install the string is available on the backside of the packaging.

II. PARTS

1. Halves, made of flex plastic (PS or PP but not ABS). Solid color. We throw it several time hitting some surface (asphalt, coneblock, concrete, etc) without any significance damage on the plastic. It’s pretty durable. The shape look similar to any butterfly-shapped yoyo in the market. It has wide-rounded back part on the halves. It has a pog on the caps which I believe can be replace with your own design (I will confirm about this later).

2. Bearing, it uses large bearing similar to yoyojam large bearing size but with smaller depth. The bearing protector / wall is removed on both side, which has positive side (easy for cleaning and inspection) as well as negative side (debris will be easy to get inside the bearing). The bearing sits on the plastic grove and not touching the axle. It’s standard bearing, not concave yet. To remove from the groove, you need a long-nose pliers to take it out since it’s lubricated …

3. The response system, uses a pair of white silicon pad (silicone recess system) on both halves which are a bit thin. They sit on a well-deep groove on the halves. If it wears-off, it can be replaced with silicone sealant, commonly use for glass-aquarium making.

4. Axle, is made of steel with chrome color. It has threaded on both side and unthreaded part on the center

5. String, is made of cotton material. It will worn out pretty quick after several throw. Change with the new one or with better poly-cotton string for long time use.

III. GEOMETRY

1. Halves size diameter

2. Pog size

3. Side to side distance

4. Gap

5. Bearing

6. Weight

7. Sleeper time is a round 30 seconds at best (throw till it stops) straight from the box.

IV. SUMMARY

With a durable plastics material,  small gap between halves and large bearing inside, we can conclude that this yoyo is perfect for :

  1. Beginners, who is start to play yoyo and would like to learn how to make a perfect throwor
  2. Anyone who tend to hit the surface quite a lot (don’t use it tho hit your fellow, dude)
  3. Anyone who declares Looping-Maniacs and love fast action
  4. General Looping technique

V. UPGRADABILITY

  1. Concave bearing replacement
  2. Semi (poly-cotton) string replacement

ooo END ooo

Aoda yoyos : Bootlegs or not Bootlegs ?

Bootlegs from free dictionary definition :

1. To make, sell, or transport (alcoholic liquor) for sale illegally.
2. To produce, distribute, or sell without permission or illegally:

Some people consider, aoda yoyos are the bootlegs / copy cat / counterfeit design of existing / other brands of yoyo. But some people consider they are not because they have different size, design in detailed. To me, both parties are right. It’s just depend on what side you’re seeing this matter.

As a manufacturer, you might said Aoda is bootlegs ’cause they stole the design and use it without the permission on some parts. Thus, those bootlegs were sold in a low price because they don’t charge for any ‘R&D’ costs created by the original inventor / manufacturer.

As players and some others who have benefits with these yoyos, might said aoda yoyos are not bootleg. It’s because they are not the exact copy. They claim that the look in a glance might be the same, but the detailed parts are absolutely different.

To me, aoda yoyos are just the horns of a dilemma. On one side they are praise for introducing yoyo to the beginners and wide-spreading the yoyo craze because of its cheap price than the original designer … but at the same time, they are also blamed as bootlegs or any negative-related products. In my opinion, they are not just simply bootlegs / copycat, they are bootlegs with clever thought. Take a look their Cryptic Arch (732011), they are bootlegs of Duncan FHZ by the halves shape but they have better respond system. Same situation as Japanese cars some times ago.

My suggestion about this issue is to think wisely and don’t get involved too much about this bootleg or not bootleg issues. It’s a common nature not just for yoyo. Once you release it to the market, others will copy. These are all happened in every products. So any one still discuss this matter, they only leave in a dreamland and look for exclusivity.

Yoyos are just yoyo. They are all feel the same, only the pride to have ones from the original designer, that makes different. Believe me, I’ve been through this. I owned SB2 the 1st ball bearing yoyo, then I’ve got what it called Playmaxx Proyo / Duncan Coldfusion, then now I’ve tried Aoda Coldfusion. All feel the same. Even the newer sometimes got better ’cause they use the exisiting technology with some improvement. For all other things that don’t meet expectation, they can be fixed.. (eg. vibe, wobble, etc). I believe that a greatest yoyo player is not the one that can only use the ready-to-use-well-known-branded yoyo but also he / she should be able to use just any yoyos and fix the problem he / she find from his yoyos. No matter what kind of yoyo he / she has.

But I don’t encourage to buy bootlegs. The choice is yours and I hope it’s a wise one. Just think how much money you will spend for your yoyos. If you think they’re worth those high price ones and you have the cash, then just buy them. So they have their own market, no need to blame each other (bootleg or not bootleg, knock-off or not knock-off, etc..)

One thing for sure, especially for original designer / maker / manufacturer, it’d be better and respectably to keep on making some innovation. This will leave others behind, and not to be trapped in this foolish discussion ’cause it won’t ended till the end of time.

I recite from one of Linux gurus :

Good programmers know what to write. Great ones know what to rewrite (and reuse).

Introduction : Aoda and the yoyos

Aodatoys is a manufacturing company specialized in toys making. That’s include yoyos as one of its line up. The quality of their yoyo products can be considered average, if we can’t say below of high quality ones.

In this blog, the yoyos that will be reviewed were (I believed) the 2nd generation / design made by Aoda company, start in 2006 / 2007. They are look better than the 1st generation and I believe this 2nd generation yoyos are more resemblance of the professional yoyos used in international yoyo competition.

The 1st generation looks dull, in my opinion. They are yoyos but not for competition. It’s more like toys, with flashing LED, radial tires shape, flashy cheap plastic (purple, green, chrome, etc). The build material and components of yoyos are different than the 2nd generation, so it won’t be covered in this review … So I’ll skip this part but if I have the material (yoyos) will make the review somehow.

Enjoy …
